Love Boat: Taiwan Toronto screening
from organizer Victor Wong, who also appears in the film:
As you may know, ReelAsian Film Festival and TIFF Bell Lightbox hosted LOVE BOAT: TAIWAN last November 9, 2019. It was a sold-out show and received great reviews. Briefly, it is a documentary directed by Valerie Soe, Professor Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, that describes how a cultural/heritage program sponsored by the Nationalist Taiwan government quickly morphed into a dating scene among second-generation Chinese who were also trying to discover their roots. I participated in the inaugural tour in 1967 and this program continued for some 30 years thereafter creating many fond memories, last friendships, romance and alumni associations around the world.
Due to popular demand, LOVE BOAT: TAIWAN will be shown again at the Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street) on January 23, 2020 at 6 pm to promote the Chinese Canadian Archives, which is also located at the TPL (5th Floor) and which has connections with this program. A short panel discussion will follow the showing.
Tickets are free but limited to 4 tickets per person. Capacity is limited to 180 seats and can be reserved on a “first come, first serve basis”. Please circulate to others who may be interested. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Love Boat: Taiwan Film Los Angeles screening with director Valerie Soe & book signing with Loveboat, Taipei author Abigail Wen

Join us for exclusive screening of award-winning documentary Love Boat: Taiwan, followed by a discussion with the director. The film explores a well-known cultural studies program sponsored by the Republic of China (Taiwan) government. Due to its reputation for college-aged overseas Chinese & Taiwanese Americans to find romance, the program is known colloquially as the Love Boat. The Love Boat has a rich history, and many famous alumni have passed through the program over the years, including Congresswoman Judy Chu, BuzzFeed's Justin Tan, and singer Wang Lee Hom. Although it started out in 1967 as a small cultural program, over the years the Love Boat eventually became harder to gain entry into than many colleges!
A novel entitled Loveboat, Taipei, will be released the same week, and its author Abigail Wen (Harvard ‘99) will join us for a Q&A and a book signing immediately following the screening.
Copies of the book will be available at the event or can be pre-ordered through your local independent bookseller (Indiebound), or Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Target.
Event Schedule:
1:00-1:30 - Check in and reception
1:30-2:40 - Love Boat: Taiwan screening
2:40-3:10 Q&A featuring Valerie Soe (director) & Abigail Hing Wen (novelist)
